You Have a Dream! What Now? Part 5: Visualise Your Future
You Have a Dream is the first of sixteen chapters of StartUp Space and explores ways to magnify human capabilities.
StartUp Space is an entrepreneur's need-to-know guidebook that instructs entrepreneurs on starting and running a business by visualising its structure and information flows.
Constructing Life's Stepping Stones
The decision to take control of your destiny is the first and most challenging step. Once you decide, you are ready to envision the platform's structure that will facilitate your journey to the top.
The road to realising your aspirations is akin to the art of architecture; you begin by creating the blueprint of your future in the abstraction of your mind.
The structure taking form are steps to your destiny.
Each level of steps constitutes elements of your short-, medium-, and long-range objectives.
There are three terraces you need to visualise initially. Each one corresponds to either short, medium or long-term goals. You can break it down further to create a more detailed picture.
Keep in mind that those details are conceptual and subject to change in the process of turning the blueprint you envisioned into a plan of action.
Building Flexibility and Resilience Into Your Vision
As you conceptualise the terraces in your mind, connect them with a sequence of steps to smoothen your climb - your action plan. These steps will ease the ascent towards each successive platform.
With each elevation reached, pause to rejuvenate and reflect. Recharge your mind and body while examining the integrity of your effort so far.
Like any good architect, affirm the solidity of your structure and ensure it’s robust enough to support the architecture of your aspirations.
The foundation has to be solid enough to withstand stresses that might arise in the future and shake your structure. Use each terrace to rest and think meditatively. Deep thinking will stretch your mind to see further.
You must understand the strengths and weaknesses of your design to assess how high it is safe to build. If you want to develop further up, you must reinforce your base.
Overstretching is often the moment we lose balance.
The ascent begins with a reasonably clear and defined path. Should doubts cloud your initial steps, consider Einstein's wisdom: "It's not that I'm so smart; it's just that I stay with problems longer." Persistence unlocks the seemingly incomprehensible.
Celebrate each win to fortify your motivation.
Turning Deliberation into Dedication
Up to this point, the investment is solely in the currency of thought. Your risk now is deciding to proceed or enjoy the comforts of routine. Deliberate thoroughly in every aspect and set deadlines to prevent endless contemplation.
Start if you don't want your reality to remain a castle in the sky and live forever in a dream world, instead of living your dream.
Exhilarating Journey Over Obstacles to Victories
As much as we might wish otherwise, the good news is usually interspersed by the bad. The start of your business venture is the right time to fortify yourself mentally for the obstacles that will test your resolve and boldness.
Venturing into entrepreneurship is to embark on a path of triumphs and trials. The outset of a voyage will test your resolve and require dexterity to overcome inevitable obstacles.
The trope that 'if it were easy, everyone would do it' holds a sobering grain of truth. The path of entrepreneurship necessitates effort, resilience and occasionally presents a stumbling block.
Overcoming each one reinforces determination.
On the other hand, if the journey were unremarkable, you would miss all the fun of testing your limits in the uncharted territory of rebuilding yourself. An uneventful journey offers little room for growth. It indicates that you have set your goals too low.
Embrace the entrepreneurship journey and face its unique challenges to make it exhilarating and fulfilling.
Doing it Your Way
The essence of entrepreneurship does not reside in monotonous predictability but in the electric thrill of overcoming challenges. The zest for pushing boundaries and pursuing milestones makes this path invigorating.
The good news about entrepreneurship is saying farewell to the nine-to-five drudgery of an unfulfilling job. It's about shaping a future that aligns with your aspirations, not dictated by technological displacement or post-graduation uncertainty.
Once you decide to become an entrepreneur, dealing with challenges is part of the package. The bright point is that the demanding road to success is the lesser of two evils.
The other option is leaving your destiny in the hands of others.
As an entrepreneur, you seize the helm of your future and navigate towards a horizon of unlimited opportunities. It keeps you away from the stressful spectre of downsizing and technological redundancy.
